The Re-Life Project
This project aims to reintroduce Patella ferruginea within three target Ligurian Marine Protected Areas (Portofino, Bergeggi and Cinque Terre), where extinction causes have been eliminated and appropriate protection is assured. Four main objectives have been identified as follows.
1. REPOPULATE AREAS
To restore a population of P. ferruginea inside the maximum protection (A) zone in the Portofino MPA and in selected zones of Bergeggi MPA and Cinque Terre MPA (and restock the donor MPA)
2. PROCEDURES FOR TRANSFER
To define a protocol of procedures for the transfer of a number of specimens from high density areas to poor density ones
3. PROCEDURES FOR REPRODUCTION
To define a protocol of procedures and techniques for the controlled reproduction of the species, to ensure the availability of juveniles for restocking new areas
4. COMMUNICATION
To raise the knowledge and environmental awareness of citizens, and stakeholders by effective communication and engaging activities to demonstrate the environmental value of protected areas and the possible impact of active restocking
